Here you have our list of the best budget fishing kayaks. All kayaks in this review include features make them ideal for fishing, whether in summer or colder weather. Please note that while there are many fishing kayaks on the market, not all of them are recommended. This review is designed to highlight some of the best-value kayaks for fishing that are of high-quality and won’t let you down.
A secure and stable kayak that is built especially for fishing.
When shopping for a kayak, you will want one that allows you to store all your essential pieces of fishing equipment. Luckily, the Tamarack has enough storage to carry tackle bags, nets, coolers, and more.
Unlike other kayaks that aren’t built especially for fishing, the Tamarack features three rod holders: two flush-mounted holders on each side of the kayak, with one swivel-top-mounted rod holder on the side. The LifeTime Tamarack Angler Kayak also comes with a paddle. Oh, and the kayak even features bungees to hold the paddle when it is not in use.
So, this kayak has many features, but what about comfort? The kayak features a small cushion on the seat. It is soft, but not the comfiest on the market. Basically, you get what you pay for. With that said, the Tamarack does offer plenty of leg room.
When looking for the best budget angling kayak, you need confidence in the quality of your purchase. Fortunately, the LifeTime Tamarack Angler has a 5 year Limited warranty.
Length – 10 feet
Width – 31 inches
Weight – 52lbs
Capacity – 275lb
The Lifetime Tamarack Angler is great for all fisherman who want to fish from a secure and stable kayak that is built especially for fishing.
Plenty of storage space for everything you need when out fishing
3 Rod holders
Paddle included + bungees to hold it in place
Good amount of leg room
With all the positives said, the kayak is not the best for fishing in the ocean or other rough waters. This is because the Tamarack features a wide build that makes it excellent for stability, but poor for paddling through the water.
The Intex Excursion Pro is the best option if you want an inflatable fishing kayak. Despite not being built especially for fishing, the kayak features rod holders to secure your fishing rods and a mounting bar to secure your other gear.
Unlike a lot of hard-shell kayaks, the surface of this kayak provides plenty of comfort. Furthermore, the kayak features two adjustable seats that have ergonomic backrests that also inflate. To really maximize comfort on your fishing trip, the Intex Excursion Pro Kayak comes with two footrests that can be adjusted according to the length of your legs.
Now, because this is an inflatable, you can be forgiven to think that the kayak isn’t very durable. However, the Excursion is crafted from high-strength 30 gauge vinyl material that has been laminated with a polyester core. This construction allows this kayak to serve you for years without being affected by wear and tear. The structure of this material isn’t affected by saltwater, sunlight, light abrasion, daily or wear and tear.
To sum up, we believe this kayak offers great value for money. In fact, this is our best-value inflatable fishing kayak.
3. Sun Dolphin Journey 10-Foot Sit-on-top Fishing Kayak
Similar to the Tamarack, this is another stable kayak that is built especially for anglers.
Similar to the Tamarack, the Sun Dolphin Journey is another stable kayak that is built especially for anglers.
With a 10 foot length, the Journey 10 is acts as a stable fishing kayak. However, due its dimensions, the kayak doesn’t cut through the water at fast speeds. If you want a fishing kayak that cuts through the water, then you may prefer the Sun Dolphin Journey 12.
The first storage hatch is located conveniently behind the seat and is sealed watertight to provide protection to important gear, like your phone and wallet. There are also multiple smaller hatches at the bow of the kayak and another that is positioned in front of the seat.
Now, comfort is important when fishing from a kayak. Luckily, the SunDolphin features a padded seatback that provides relief for your back. The kayak also provides plenty of room and comes with adjustable foot-braces too, allowing users to adjust to their optimal comfort position. With that said, we do wish the kayak featured slightly more comfort on the seat. Although this can be fixed with a small amount of DIY.
With retractable handles located on the bow and stern, this kayak is easy to carry to the water’s edge.
What makes this kayak so good for fishing is the rod holding capabilities. The kayak features two flush-mount rod holders on each side, with a swivelling rod holder that is located next to the cup holder.
What we really love about the Sundolphin is that it features multiple storage hatches for you to safely store all your essential pieces of fishing equipment.
Comfy seat and backrest, fully adjustable foot braces
The Vapor 10 Recreational Angler is a 10 foot sit-inside fishing kayak that is designed to offer stable fishing for one person.
To be honest, we prefer the SunDolphin Journey review above, although the Vapor 10 has a higher weight capacity.
The main area for carrying your gear is the storage well in the stern, which can be customized with additional accessories. Like similar kayaks, there is also bungee rigging positioned at the bow, which is great for storing nets and other fishing equipment.
The sit-in fishing kayak comes with a “Comfort Flex” seat that is well-padded and can be adjusted to suit your preference. Padding is also found on the side to provide comfort to the thighs. Furthermore, the Vapor 10 features an adjustable foot brace system that lets you easily re-position your feet, known as “Glide Track Technology”.
With a cockpit size of 48 x 19.5 inches, this fishing kayak offers plenty of room for users to sit comfortable and move around to cast, reel in, and handle the catch.
In regards to portability, the Vapor 10 has a hard-shell single-layer polyethylene construction. This material is durable and lightweight, which makes storage, transport and carrying easy to do – especially with the carry handle at either end.
Overall length – 10 feet
Width – 28.5 inch
Weight – 49lbs
Capacity – 325lbs
High Weight Capacity
Accessories can be added to the storage area, plus rigging for extra fishing equipment storage
With a colorway that screams fishing, this kayak is incredibly tough for an inflatable, thanks to its double-wall construction.
The Colorado Kayak is a durable inflatable fishing kayak. They are great for those who don’t have the space for a large hard-shell kayak.
Unlike some other kayaks, the Colorado has a solid-feeling 1000D nylon floor. This floor acts as a foundation to the kayak and further protects against punctures, should you be concerned about that.
With this being built for fishing, the kayak features two rod holders, which are found on either side of the paddlers. This allows two people to fish from the kayak at the same time. Anglers will also love that the kayak includes D rings and mesh pockets on the sides to hold tackle and other fishing essentials.
The kayak comes with a carry bag and pressure gauge, but no pump or paddle! Now, a lot of kayaks don’t come with paddles, but we are mildly disappointed that a pump is not included.
It’s tough to choose between this Coleman Colorado and the Intex Excursion. Both are inflatable tandem kayaks that are comfortable, stable, safe, and offer value for money. With that said, we feel the green-colored Colorado has the edge if you want a kayak that is built especially for fishing. However, the Intex Excursion is better for those who value comfort and those want a pump included.
Overall length – 10 feet 9 inches
Width – 39 inch
Weight – 41lbs
Capacity – 470lbs
Double-wall construction = mega tough and durable
Puncture-resistant outer layer that protects the inner inflatable layer.
To put your mind at ease, the kayak also carries multiple air chambers, which prevents sinking if a leak should happen.
How to find the best affordable kayaks for fishing?
When searching the web for your next fishing kayak, you should consider your requirements. Certain kayaks offer advantages over other kayaks, especially for fishing. Before deciding on the best-value angling kayak, we must look at the following factors:
Price – Kayaks are available in a very wide price bracket – ranging from hundreds of dollars to thousands of dollars. As such, price is likely an important factor for you. No matter how much you’re willing to spend, none of us want to waste money on overpriced items.
Kayak weightcapacity – When fishing from a kayak, you will likely be carrying a lot of fishing tackle and equipment. As such, you should ensure that you purchase the best heavy-duty fishing kayak for the money, especially if you are going to be carrying a lot of cargo.
Kayak dimensions – No one wants a kayak that is too small for their use. By the same token, you don’t want to order a kayak, for you to realize that it is huge! Since you will be fishing from the safety of your kayak, we recommend purchasing wide kayaks, or kayaks that are especially built for fishing.
Comfort – Let’s be honest, fishing usually consists of long days on the water. As such, comfort is high on the priority list. In fact, you could even install an elevated platform on top of the kayak. Doing this would allow you to lean against something to take momentary rests.
Warranty – If you want to make a safe purchase, you should only do business with one of the many kayak brands that offer warranties. These warranties provide you with protection should there be any faults or issues with the product.
This guide will be regularly updated with the latest and best angling kayaks that we believe represents value. Each of the kayaks in this review has been chosen because of their high-quality, yet affordable price. We recommend weighing up the pros and cons of each kayak, then making your decision.
